A Beginner’s Guide to Closet Measurements
The key to planning a closet project is learning how to use your space efficiently. Get the most out of your system with accurate measurements for hardware. As you look at our beginner's guide to closet measurements, you’ll learn some things to consider.
What Measurements You Need
The area's width, depth, return walls, and door-opening size are the measurements you’ll need for your closet. People often forget to measure door openings and mistakenly buy bulky hardware that doesn't fit.
Measurements determine the kind of hardware, shelving, and features you can add to the layout. Most closets aren't perfectly square, but hardware from us at Wood Closet Design has corner units that fit angles. During this process, it's best to have an assistant while you take measurements. They can write down numbers as you call them out and organize measurements.
You’ll want to maintain existing components in the space, so take note of any obstructions, like electrical wiring, lighting fixtures, or security boxes.
Important Numbers To Know
In order to construct a functional closet, you should follow general guidelines and numbers:
- The clothes section must have a minimum depth of 24 inches to maintain distance from the back wall.
- Shelves for folded clothes should be around 12 inches apart.
- Shoe shelves must be six to seven inches apart. Boot shelves should be 12 inches apart to accommodate the extra material.
- For width, allow 8–9 inches of space for shoes. These measurements are ideal for 24 or 32-inch-wide shelves.
- The minimum height for double-hanging rods is 84 inches.
- Shirts and blouses will take up one inch of rod space.
- Bottoms (pants and skirts) require 1.25 inches of space.
- Dresses, jackets, and suits require three inches of space on hanging rods.
Why Blueprints Matter
For all renovations, you need a solid plan. Blueprints contain measurements and specifications inside closets. It’s important to measure the area accurately and purchase the right hardware, even with bare walls. Compare closet and furniture measurements online or in-store to avoid buying the wrong pieces!
